As a band, the London-based Apocalypse should need little introduction. They achieved a degree of fame amongst fans of the New Wave Of British Heavy Metal for their 1982 ‘Storm Child’ single which was then followed up three years later by the well-received album The Prophet, although by this time the band had undergone an enforced change of name and were now known as Omega.
Fast-forward over forty years and Apocalypse are back with a new album Last Man Standing. Pretty much the sole work of guitarist / vocalist Steve Grainger, who is indeed the last man standing following the following the deaths of both his brother and drummer Marc and bassist Dave Robertson, this new offering from Apocalypse – or Apocalypse NWOBHM as Steve has rebranded the band – follows on seamlessly from Abandon Hope which was released by High Roller Records in 2010.
Last Man Standing combines some new material written by Steve with older songs which in their original form date back to his and his brother’s first band, Phaze, but which still have the vibe and drive of Apocalypse. With contributions from both Marc and Dave, and lyrical references to some of the band’s past material, Last Man Standing is the latest instalment in the Apocalypse story, and is a worthy addition to the band’s catalogue.
Die Londoner Band Apocalypse sollte kaum einer Einführung bedürfen. Sie erlangten unter Fans der New Wave Of British Heavy Metal durch ihre Single »Storm Child« von 1982 Ruhm, der drei Jahre später das vielbeachtete Album »The Prophet« folgen sollte, obwohl die Band zu diesem Zeitpunkt bereits eine Namensänderung durchlaufen hatte und nun als Omega bekannt war.
Spulen wir über vierzig Jahre vor. Apocalypse sind mit einem neuen Album zurück, »Last Man Standing«. Das aktuelle Werk knüpft nahtlos an »Abandon Hope an«, das 2010 von High Roller Records veröffentlicht wurde. Mittlerweile hat Gitarrist und Sänger Steve Grainger, der nach dem Tod sowohl seines Bruders Marc (ehemaliger Schlagzeuger der Band) und des Bassisten Dave Robertson tatsächlich als „letzter Mann übriggeblieben ist“, die Gruppe in Apocalypse NWOBHM umbenannt.
»Last Man Standing« kombiniert neues Material, das Steve geschrieben hat, mit älteren Songs, die in ihrer ursprünglichen Form aus der Vorgängerband Phaze stammen (die er und sein Bruder betrieben). Die Atmosphäre und der Drive von Apocalypse sind geblieben. Mit Beiträgen von Marc und Dave sowie textlichen Anspielungen auf einige frühere Stücke der Band ist »Last Man Standing« der neueste Teil der Apocalypse-Saga und in dieser Form definitiv eine würdige Ergänzung des Bandkatalogs.
