»Burning Down Paradise«, the sixth studio album of NWOBHM legends Tokyo Blade, was originally issued on Fresh Fruit in 1995. Fresh Fruit was a sublabel of SPV from Hannover. High Roller Records is proud to present »Burning Down Paradise« for the very first time ever on glorious vinyl.
The record marked the re-union of Andy Boulton with singer Alan Marsh. The pair had not worked together since the Tokyo Blade debut album in 1983. The line-up on »Burning Down Paradise« was completed by John Wiggins on second guitar, Colin Riggs playing bass and Marc Angel behind the drums.
“I think all twelve songs stood the test of time pretty well,” comments guitarist and founding member Andy Boulton today, “but it was an impossible time for hard rock and heavy metal, musical tastes had changed considerably. The album was recorded in a small studio just outside Marlborough in Wiltshire. A guy called Nick Beer engineered the album, and I guess you could say we all produced it, although mainly it was Alan and I, as the main songwriters, who had the most impact on the sound of the record.”
According to the guitarist, reactions to the album were mixed back in the day: “Opinions varied, some old fans didn’t like the direction that we took, and others did. As far as critics are concerned, I never take any notice of them anyway. My attitude is: if you don’t like it, just don’t listen to it.”
After the release of the album, Andy and Alan once again went their separate ways and Tokyo Blade disbanded. This is why: “We just got fed up with struggling with no support coming from anywhere. It was the wrong time for our brand of music, and we couldn’t see the point of struggling on. In England we call it 'flogging a dead horse.’”
»Burning Down Paradise«, das sechste Studioalbum der NWOBHM-Legende Tokyo Blade, erblickte ursprünglich im Jahre 1995 über Fresh Fruit das Licht der Welt. Fresh Fruit war ein Sublabel von SPV in Hannover. High Roller Records legt »Burning Down Paradise« jetzt zum allerersten Mal als Vinyl auf.
Die Platte markierte die Wiedervereinigung von Gitarrist Andy Boulton und Sänger Alan Marsh, die das erste Mal seit dem Debütalbum von Tokyo Blade im Jahre 1983 wieder gemeinsame Sache machten. Die damalige Besetzung wurde komplettiert von John Wiggins an der zweiten Gitarre, Colin Riggs am Bass und Marc Angel hinterm Schlagzeug.
„Ich denke, alle zwölf Songs haben den Test der Zeit gut überstanden“, kommentiert Gitarrist und Gründungsmitglied Andy Boulton heute. „Allerdings war es eine schwierige Zeit für Hardrock und Heavy Metal. Der musikalische Geschmack hatte sich drastisch verändert. Das Album wurde in einem kleinen Studio direkt außerhalb von Marlborough in Wiltshire aufgenommen. Zusammen mit einem Tontechniker namens Nick Beer. Ich nehme an, man könnte sagen, dass die ganze Band »Burning Down Paradise« produziert hat. Als Hauptsongwriter hatten Alan und ich am Ende aber wohl den größten Einfluss auf den Sound der Platte.“
Laut Aussage des Gitarristen erntete das Album zum Erscheinungszeitpunkt unterschiedliche Reaktionen: „Die Meinungen gingen auseinander, einige alte Fans mochten unsere neue Richtung nicht, während andere positiver eingestellt waren. Und was die Kritiker an sich betrifft, auf die höre ich eh nicht. Meine Einstellung ist: Wenn dir die Musik nicht gefällt, hör sie dir einfach nicht an.“
Nach der Veröffentlichung von »Burning Down Paradise« gingen Andy Boulton und Alan Marsh abermals getrennte Wege. Tokyo Blade lösten sich (zwischenzeitlich) auf: „Wir hatten die Schnauze voll, ohne Unterstützung von irgendwoher weiterzumachen. Es war eine schlechte Zeit für unsere Art von Musik, und wir sahen keinen Sinn darin, die Band weiterhin am Leben zu halten und unsere Kraft zu vergeuden.“
