While the first three Yes albums are highly recommended, it is fair to say that *Fragile* was the album that turned the band into superstars in America. It may or may not be a coincidence that this was the band's first album featuring Rick Wakeman on keyboards, but it almost certainly has something to do with the fact that *Fragile* included two songs that would go on to become among the band's most iconic: "Roundabout" and "Long Distance Runaround."
*Fragile* was recorded at Advision Studios in London, England, and was originally intended to be a double album mixing studio and live tracks; however, that plan never materialized—nor did the idea of recording the album with producer Tom Dowd in Miami. Instead, the band co-produced the LP with Eddy Offord. But you are probably wondering how Wakeman ended up in the lineup for this record, so let’s get to that.
When Yes began initial rehearsals for the *Fragile* sessions, Tony Kaye was still their keyboardist; however, he was dismissed after repeatedly resisting the idea of expanding beyond his standard piano and Hammond organ setup to incorporate Mellotron or Moog sounds. Following his departure, the band invited Wakeman to join—and they were fortunate that he accepted, as he had coincidentally been offered another interesting opportunity: a role in David Bowie’s touring band. Wakeman chose to join Yes because it offered him greater artistic freedom.
The late Chris Squire told *The A.V. Club* in 2012: "When Rick Wakeman joined the band, he brought the Moog synthesizer, the Mellotron, and everything else with him, so those instruments became part of our arsenal right from the start, and we used them for quasi-orchestral pieces." "That worked very well for us."
Indeed: given Wakeman’s influential presence and the inclusion of so many iconic Yes songs, it is no surprise that *Fragile* appears in the pages of *1001 Albums You Must Hear Before You Die*.
