Formed in 1990 in New Monmouth, New Jersey, with members Phil Barbour (guitars), Joe Maurer (bass), Dago Pacheco (vocals), and Billy Reid (drums).
Guitarist Phil Barbour was looking to put a band together when he was introduced to bassist Joe Maurer, who coincidentally was looking for a guitarist. Maurer was playing in a punk outfit that Barbour would end up joining. However, Barbour's interest leaned more towards a commercial heavy metal sound. Gradually, the punk band began to morph into a heavy metal band. Barbour brought in a singer named Dago Pacheko to finalize the transformation SPELLBOUND.
The band then recorded a few original songs on a small 4-track to shop around, hoping to get decent management or score a record deal. The rough quality demo would earn SPELLBOUND, an investor who helped bring the band into Earthquake Studios in North Jersey to work with engineer Steven Missal. After obtaining the recordings from Missal, the band took the tapes to Mission Sound Studios to be mixed with Joe Santucci. The result would be the 5-song "Chapter XI" cassette EP in 1991, now available for the first time ever on CD.
