Originally released in April 2016, With Whips and Chains was SAVAGE MASTER’s pivotal second album. Mask of the Devil, the band’s debut album two years prior, loudly & lewdly announced their arrival, and momentum steadily built in the interim. By the time of With Whips and Chains, SAVAGE MASTER clearly possessed a “star power” that would elevate them beyond the underground. Sure, their sound was much the same – early ‘80s US metal, but possessing a power and poise that was equally reverential and refreshing – and the recording was relatively raw, but this second album was packed to the gills with SONGS: rough & ready ANTHEMS that brought the hooded Louisville quintet’s ever-growing fanbase to a boil when played live. What’s more, their concertedly occult lyrics are amplified further on With Whips and Chains, making form meet content in a most devilish way.
