Mexico’s Phantom bring raw, unrelenting energy to speed and thrash metal, and their 2022 “Hellspeed Death” demo is now hitting a wider audience with a High Roller Records re-release, complete with two bonus tracks.
“Hellspeed Death” remains a true demo in spirit: raw drums, gritty vocals and guitars that cut with sharp precision. The songs are steeped in old-school influences — early Slayer, Venom, Tank, Motörhead and Voivod — but still full of the band’s own ferocious personality. Tracks like ‘Payback,’ ‘Reaper’s Bane,’ and ‘Death Crusade’ race forward with galloping, punk-tinged thrash energy, while ‘Onslaught’ and ‘Speedhammer’ deliver blackened, high-velocity assaults that leave no room for compromise.
Phantom write what matches the mood of the music: fast, loud, and aggressive themes like war, revenge, horror, and dark chaos, aiming to leave a mark and revitalize the underground. At this stage, the band had already experienced moments that hinted at bigger things to come. Thus, the new edition of “Hellspeed Death” showcases a fledgling band full of energy, attitude, and DIY ethos. Their mission has been clear from the outset: to push their music as far as it can go, play relentlessly, and prepare for a debut album (“Handed to Execution”, 2023) that eventually turned quite a few heads.

Phantoms Texte über Krieg, Rache, Horror und dunkles Chaos spiegeln die Stimmung der Musik und das Ziel der Band wider den Underground wiederzubeleben. Schon zu diesem frühen Zeitpunkt deutete die Band an, dass sie zu Höherem berufen ist.
Die Neuauflage von „Hellspeed Death“ zeigt eine junge Band im vollen Saft mit Haltung und DIY-Ethos. Ihre Mission war von Anfang an klar: es mit ihrer Musik so weit wie möglich zu bringen, unermüdlich live zu spielen und sich auf ein Debütalbum („Handed to Execution“, 2023) vorzubereiten, das schließlich einiges an Aufmerksamkeit erregen sollte.
