Five years after their debut full-length “Summoning Hell”, German duo Nocturnal Witch released “A Thousand Pyres” in 2019, marking the next logical step in their evolution with more refined arrangements and a broader range of influences, which – mind you – did not dilute their well-established stylistic template. It’s fair to call it straightforward blackened thrash metal, although the from Thuringia, Germany, likes to disagree. “Such categorizations are usually made by others,” vocalist/guitarist Tyrant and drummer Baphomet believe. “We ourselves don’t think in such patterns when it comes to songwriting. We just make the music which we feel like making and which comes naturally.” For “A Thousand Pyres”, this meant a more melodic approach (title track, ‘Scorn and Wrath’) and choruses (‘Dark Forces’) even more memorable than those on the preceding album. With the experience gained from earlier sessions and in other bands, the two musicians created an album devoid of any fillers with an authentically raw yet nuanced sound, thanks to recording at their own rehearsal space Black Magic Studios with the mobile equipment of Temple of Disharmony’s Patrick W. Engel, who eventually mixed and mastered the material. Judging from the quality of “A Thousand Pyres” on all levels, it’s exciting to imagine what Nocturnal Witch will come up with on their third album, which is in the making as these lines are written. For the time being, enjoy this underground gem as a High Roller Records CD and vinyl reissue.
