Description
Hells Headbangers Records, 3 x CD digipack with 28 page booklet, remastered

Presented in an 8-panel deluxe digipak with an extensive 28-page booklet, The Collection is a definitive archival document celebrating the complete recorded legacy of FROM THE DEPTHS. The set features the original artwork for each release, complete lyrics, and detailed liner notes from guitarist Matt Sorg reflecting on every chapter of the band's history. Making The Collection even more special is its cover artwork, created by Michael Bertram, father of FROM THE DEPTHS guitarist Brian Bertram (who passed away in September 2025). Michael passed away when Brian was still a child, lending the artwork a deeply personal significance rooted in the band’s history and creative legacy. Hailing from Cleveland's fertile metal underground, FROM THE DEPTHS existed between 1994 and 2000 and forged a distinctive sound that occupied the shadowy space between blackened death metal and deathened black metal. Led by ex-Blood of Christ guitarist Matt Sorg and featuring a cast of respected scene veterans, the band left behind a small but remarkably enduring catalog that captured a unique moment in extreme metal's evolution. Gathering the band's complete studio output, The Collection presents the full recorded legacy of FROM THE DEPTHS across three CDs, along with essential bonus material from their short-lived successor band, DEAD OF NIGHT. The journey begins with the band's 1996 debut, From the Depths, a crushing and atmospheric recording where savage riffs, ancient keyboard textures, and diabolical songwriting collide. The album balances brute-force aggression with an ethereal quality rarely heard in underground metal of the era, creating a sound that feels both otherworldly and deeply rooted in death metal tradition. Equally important is the commanding vocal performance of "Malcolm Judas Anthony," better known as Cleveland metal legend Jim Sadist (NUNSLAUGHTER), whose unmistakable presence looms large throughout the recording. The evolution continued with 1997's Bereavement mini-album. Following a lineup change that brought in former DECREPIT members Duane Morris on bass and Rob Molzan on vocals, joining fellow ex-DECREPIT member Matt Sorg, the band expanded its musical palette while retaining its crushing core. The keyboards became more prominent, the melodies more ambitious, and the songwriting more epic in scope. Drawing inspiration from both the emerging melodic death metal movement and the dark grandeur of the Greek black metal scene, Bereavement refined the band's identity into something even more distinctive. That progression reached its peak on 1998's Elysium, the band's second and final full-length album. Here, FROM THE DEPTHS fully embraced a more intricate and expansive approach, with labyrinthine songwriting, fluid guitar work, and haunting synth arrangements woven into a powerful blackened death metal framework. The performances are sharper, the compositions more adventurous, and the emotional weight heavier than ever, resulting in a record that remains remarkably fresh decades later. Elysium stands as the band's crowning achievement and a fitting conclusion to their recording career. Rounding out the collection are the four tracks from DEAD OF NIGHT's ultra-rare 2001 demo. Featuring members of the final FROM THE DEPTHS lineup, DEAD OF NIGHT effectively carried the band's vision forward while stripping away much of the atmospheric ornamentation in favor of a more direct and relentless attack. The result is a fierce display of blackened death thrash that captures the spirit of the era while showcasing the exceptional musicianship and songwriting that defined these Cleveland veterans. Spanning three essential releases and a crucial epilogue, The Collection documents the complete artistic arc of one of the Midwest underground's most overlooked bands. From the savage darkness of the debut through the epic scope of Bereavement, the ambitious heights of Elysium, and the final chapter represented by DEAD OF NIGHT, this set preserves a legacy that deserves recognition alongside the finest blackened death metal of its time.
