FRIGHTMARE formed in 2002 and hailed from the then-hot Portland, Oregon death/grind scene, alongside such contemporaries as Engorged, Lord Gore, Splatterhouse, and Blood Freak. Along with sharing members with the first three named at various points, FRIGHTMARE were among the pivotal bands who defined the late/great Razorback Recordings during the label’s early glory years. Most of all, FRIGHTMARE helped bring back the FUN in gory, grinding death metal with their two full-lengths.
Released in 2006, Bringing Back the Bloodshed was FRIGHTMARE’s second – and, so far, final – album. Their preceding debut album, 2003’s Midnight Murder Mania, made no concessions to “progression” and stuck to the guns of Carcass’ immortal first two albums. That Exhumed at that time had abandoned such for something cleaner and more Heartworked is ironic given that FRIGHTMARE ever so slightly expanded their attack with an integration of fleeting mid-tempos and even-more-fleeting leads on LP#2, perhaps showing how one could honor that mountain of Reek of Putrefaction & Symphonies of Sickness without totally slicking up. Otherwise, the rest of Bringing Back the Bloodshed is equally ripping – and STILL no triggers!
