In 1986, bassist Ron Royce (Ron Broder), guitarist Tommy T. Baron (Tommy Vetterli) and drummer Marquis Marky (Markus Edelmann) issued their first demo tape »Death Cult« with the help of Celtic Frost’s Tom Gabriel Fischer on vocals (Fischer was also responsible for the lyrics).
A short while later, in early 1987, Zürich’s avantgarde metal pioneers inked a deal with Noise Records from Berlin. By that time, bassist Ron Royce had decided to take on the role as the lead singer of Coroner himself.
Ron singing changed the band’s way of songwriting, moving away from traditional (dark) metal towards forward-thinking thrash metal and thereby creating their very own niche. “Yeah, definitely,” agrees Tommy. “The vocals aren’t very melodic, and they’re actually kept quite simple. That’s why we kept trying to make the music as exciting and intense as possible.”
Karl-Ulrich Walterbach of Noise Records had booked time at Music Lab studios in Berlin for Coroner to record their debut album under the watchful eyes of Harris Johns.
»R.I.P.« was issued in June 1987, receiving very good press feedback. Guitarist Tommy Vetterli comments on the album: “I think the sound could have been better, but that wasn’t really the fault of the producer. It was more that we were always kind of pushing ourselves to the limit of what we could do. That’s why it probably wasn’t played as tightly everywhere.”
The key song on »R.I.P.« was “Reborn Through Hate” (featuring guest vocals by Tom Fischer), a number still performed live by the band on a regular basis today. Also, “Spiral Dream” from the »Death Cult« demo made a reappearance, this time sung by Ron.
Out of the twelve songs, four were instrumentals. Were they always planned as instrumentals, or did the band just have no lyrics for these songs? “I mean, instrumental songs are actually a bit more complicated to write than lyrics, so that wasn’t really the reason,” says Tommy Vetterli. “Back then, it was just the era of instrumental songs, and we also wanted to show the audience that we had practiced a lot.”

Kurz darauf, Anfang 1987, unterschrieben die Züricher Avantgarde-Metal-Pioniere einen Vertrag mit Noise Records aus Berlin. Zu diesem Zeitpunkt hatte sich Bassist Ron Royce entschieden, selbst die Rolle des Leadsängers von Coroner zu übernehmen.
Rons Gesang veränderte die Art des Songwritings der Band, sie entfernte sich vom traditionellen (düsteren) Metal hin zu fortschrittlichem Thrash Metal und schuf so ihre eigene Nische. „Ja, auf jeden Fall“, stimmt Tommy zu. „Der Gesang ist nicht sehr melodisch und wird tatsächlich recht einfach gehalten. Deshalb haben wir immer wieder versucht, die Musik so spannend und intensiv wie möglich zu machen.“
Karl-Ulrich Walterbach von Noise Records hatte Studiozeit im Music Lab in Berlin gebucht, damit Coroner ihr Debütalbum unter den wachsamen Augen von Harris Johns aufnehmen konnten.
»R.I.P.« wurde im Juni 1987 veröffentlicht und erhielt sehr positives Feedback in der Presse. Gitarrist Tommy Vetterli kommentiert das Album: „Ich finde, der Sound hätte besser sein können, aber das war nicht wirklich die Schuld des Produzenten. Es war eher so, dass wir uns immer an unsere Grenzen trieben. Deshalb wurde es wahrscheinlich nicht so tight eingespielt, wie es hätte sein sollen.“
Der Schlüsselsong auf »R.I.P.« nannte sich „Reborn Through Hate“ (mit Gastgesang von Tom Fischer), eine Nummer, die die Band bis heute regelmäßig live spielt. Außerdem tauchte „Spiral Dream“ vom »Death Cult«-Demo wieder auf, diesmal gesungen von Ron.
Von den zwölf Liedern waren vier Instrumentalstücke. Waren diese von Anfang an als Instrumentals geplant, oder hatte die Band einfach keine Texte für jene Songs? „Ich meine, instrumentale Songs sind tatsächlich etwas komplizierter zu schreiben als welche mit Texten, also war das nicht wirklich der Grund“, sagt Tommy Vetterli. „Damals war es einfach die Ära der instrumentalen Songs, und wir wollten dem Publikum auch zeigen, dass wir viel geübt hatten.“
