Although ‘Suffer’ only has a running time of 26 minutes, for Fat Mike, the singer and bassist of NoFX, the record was ‘the album that changed everything’ in terms of the American punk revival of the nineties. In fact, the band's third LP in 1988 not only marked Bad Religion's international breakthrough, it also laid the foundation for the massive success of the Epitaph label, which signed The Offspring, NoFX, Rancid and Pennywise, the very bands that caused a sensation in the nineties with melodic hardcore, pop punk and skate punk. ‘Suffer’ offered something completely new for its time: fast but very melodic songs with polyphonic vocals and background choirs as well as abrupt rhythm changes; added to this were Greg Graffin's clear vocals, characterised by precise pronunciation and metre, as well as intellectually inspired lyrics. Bad Religion recorded the 15 songs on ‘Suffer’ with the original line-up – Greg Graffin (vocals), Brett Gurewitz (guitar), Greg Hetson (guitar), Jay Bentley (bass), Pete Finestone (drums) – in April 1988 at Westbeach Recorders studio in Hollywood. The album was recorded and mixed by Brett Gurewitz and Donnell Cameron in eight days.
