Back in 1980, in London, Maurice Coyne and bassist Alan Levett (both ex-Urchin), joined forces with vocalist Tony Thurlow, guitarist Trevor Walker and drummer Cliff Massey, to form Berlyn. The musical style consisted of Hard Rock, but with hints of boogie rock and influences from Led Zeppelin, Bad Company, Thin Lizzy, resulting in a heavy but catchy sound accompanied by uptempo rhythms. In 1982, Berlyn recorded a demo tape with three songs: Streetfights, We've Heard It All Before and Don't Ever Laugh in My Face. Despite having performed a number of live shows in the early 1980s, especially in the area surrounding London, the band never released any official singles or albums during their active period, mainly due to a lack of financial resources. The band disbanded in March 1983. After that, its members took a break from the music industry for a few years. Berlyn had a short life, but left a small mark within the New Wave of British Heavy Metal movement due to the energy of its shows and the combination of hard rock with boogie grooves and striking melodies, continuing to be one of the bands that most attract the attention of collectors and fans of the movement. In the mid-1970s, guitarist Maurice Coyne formed a band with Adrian Smith called Evil Ways, which later changed its name to Urchin.
